Rising Energy Prices: What Actually Reduces Bills (And What Just Sounds Good)

Energy bills are staying high. The January 2026 Ofgem price cap sits at £1,758 annually for a typical household, barely changed from previous quarters despite wholesale gas prices softening since February 2025.The 2022-2023 crisis peaked at £4,279 in January 2023. We've come down from that, but we're not returning to pre-crisis levels. Why? Because while wholesale gas prices drove the spike, the current floor is set by network upgrade costs, policy levies, and infrastructure investment for electrification.
