FAQ: C&G 2921-34 Domestic Commercial EV Charging Installation/
The City & Guilds 2921-34 Level 3 Award in the Requirements for the Design and Installation of Domestic and Small Commercial Electric Vehicle Charging Installations is a qualification designed to provide qualified electricians with the knowledge and skills to design, install, inspect, test, commission, and maintain electric vehicle (EV) charging equipment in domestic and small commercial settings. It aligns with BS 7671 and the IET Code of Practice for EV Charging Equipment Installation.
The course is designed for practicing electricians who want to upskill in the design, installation, and maintenance of EV charging points. Candidates must be qualified electricians with relevant electrotechnical qualifications.
The course covers key requirements for EV charging equipment, including types and features of charging systems, designing installations, earthing arrangements, protection against open PEN conductor faults, smart charging, load management, inspection, testing, commissioning, and handover requirements. It also includes integration into prosumer installations and relevant regulations.
The C&G 2921-34 replaces the 2919-01 and 2921-31 qualifications. It reflects updated industry standards, including BS 7671:2018 Amendment 2 and the 5th Edition IET Code of Practice. It focuses on reducing unsafe practices, introduces stricter entry requirements (e.g., requiring a Gold Card or equivalent), and includes new topics like smart charging and prosumer integration.
Yes, the course covers both domestic (single-phase, 16-32 amp) and small commercial (three-phase, 11-22 kW) EV charger installations.
While not legally mandatory, the qualification is highly recommended to ensure compliance with BS 7671 and industry standards. It is often required to become an approved installer for schemes like OZEV and by bodies such as NICEIC and NAPIT.
The course typically takes 2 to 2.5 days, with some providers offering a blended learning format (e.g., one evening online and one full day in-center). Online versions may be self-paced with a maximum of 6 months access.
The C&G 2921-34 is a Level 3 qualification on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF).
Upon successful completion, you will receive the City & Guilds Level 3 Award in the Requirements for the Design and Installation of Domestic and Small Commercial Electric Vehicle Charging Installations (2921-34).
