Why is the City & Guilds 2382-26 18th Edition Course Important?
The City & Guilds 2382-26 is the definitive qualification for anyone involved in the design, installation, or testing of electrical systems. It directly aligns with BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, the official British Standard that governs all electrical installations in the UK.
Maintaining Compliance and Scheme Status
The 18th Edition is the national benchmark for electrical safety and compliance. Holding the most up-to-date qualification is a strict prerequisite for joining or maintaining membership in competent person schemes (such as NAPIT or NICEIC) and is required for JIB grading. Ensuring you are certified to the latest Amendment 4 standards protects your business from liability and guarantees your work meets current legal expectations.
Putting Safety First
Electrical safety is at the core of everything we do at Elec Training. This course covers the latest protective measures required to mitigate risks on-site, including updated regulations on electric shock protection, fire prevention, and overcurrent management. Staying current on these standards ensures a safer working environment for you, your team, and your clients.
Career Progression and Commercial Credibility
Carrying the latest City & Guilds 2382-26 credential on your CV demonstrates a commitment to professional excellence. Main contractors, local authorities, and commercial clients explicitly look for installers who are certified to the newest regulatory amendments. Keeping your qualifications current ensures you don’t miss out on high-value tendering and employment opportunities.
Keeping Pace with Clean Energy Tech
The electrotechnical industry is evolving rapidly alongside the transition to net zero. The regulations continuously adapt to safely integrate modern technologies—including stationary secondary battery storage systems, Power over Ethernet (PoE), and EV charging infrastructure. This course ensures you understand how to install these systems safely, keeping your skills relevant and ahead of the curve.
What Will I Learn On This Course?
Why Choose Elec Training for Your 18th Edition?
At Elec Training, our goal is to build your confidence and technical competence, not just help you pass a test. We make sure you fully grasp how to apply the regulations to real-world installations so you can take pride in delivering compliant, safe work.
Tutors with Real On-Site Experience
Our instructional team is comprised entirely of time-served, JIB-qualified electricians who have spent decades on the tools. They bridge the gap between regulatory theory and practical application, translating complex BS 7671 clauses into clear, field-relevant context. They understand the realities of site work and are dedicated to supporting you through every module.
Comprehensive Regulatory Coverage
The 2382-26 is entirely theory-based, focusing on navigating and interpreting the IET Wiring Regulations book accurately. We guide you deeply through every section, including:
- Scope and Fundamental Principles: Understanding the baseline framework of the regulations.
- Earthing and Bonding: Correctly identifying earthing arrangements and protective bonding requirements.
- Fault Protection: Master the rules around Automatic Disconnection of Supply (ADS).
- Selection and Erection: Navigating cable calculations, sizing containment, and isolation.
- Special Installations: Handling complex rules for bathrooms, solar PV networks, and EV charging points.
The Essential Gateway for Your Career
Whether you are an apprentice completing your initial training or an experienced installer updating your credentials, this qualification is a non-negotiable milestone:
- Approved Schemes: Holding the current 18th Edition certificate is a mandatory prerequisite to join competent person schemes like NICEIC or NAPIT, allowing you to legally self-certify your electrical work.
- JIB Grading: This course is a compulsory element required to achieve or maintain your Gold Card status as a fully qualified JIB Electrician.

There are no formal entry prerequisites for the City & Guilds 2382-26 qualification. The course is open to anyone looking to gain a comprehensive understanding of the current IET Wiring Regulations.

Learner Feedback
“I highly recommend Elec Training, especially Josh. He is a very good man, friendly and supportive throughout the process. He helped me find a job, which has been very helpful for completing my NVQ portfolio. I really appreciate all the support and guidance he has given me. Thank you, Josh and the Elec Training team!“
“So far I have completed my level 2. I just want to say a massive thank you to you to Neil and Mark. This course has been made so interactive and enjoyable because of you. You always do well with something when you get on with the people teaching you and I can’t thank these gentlemen enough. I wish I could continue my level 3 with you guys, I appreciate all the help and confidence you have given us. In 4 weeks I have gone from having NO BACKGROUND and NO KNOWLEDGE in electrical work to being able to put together an assessment piece. Thank you Mark and Neil!”
“Guys doing as promised, however patience is recommended. I would advise to the team more direct approach to each student. More frequent contact with progress details would help not feeling forgotten. Ultimately, despite the poor communication, I am willing to award the maximum number of stars because the result exceeded my expectations.”
Frequently Asked Questions
I already hold the C&G 2382-22 (Amendment 2) certificate. Do I legally need to upgrade to the 2382-26?
Technically, your existing 18th Edition certificate remains a valid historical qualification. However, Amendment 4 (BS 7671:2018+A4:2026) introduces a strict cutoff date: after 15 October 2026, all new designs, installations, and electrical certifications must comply with the new standard.
If you are registered with a Competent Person Scheme (like NICEIC or NAPIT) or hold a JIB/ECS Gold Card, you will likely be required to demonstrate up-to-date knowledge of Amendment 4 to maintain your registered status, pass your annual assessments, or renew your card.
Do I need to buy the new regulations book, and what can I bring into the exam?
No, you do not need to buy it—we provide a brand-new copy of the book included in your course price. Because the City & Guilds 2382-26 assessment is entirely based on the latest standards, you must use the official IET Wiring Regulations 18th Edition: Amendment 4 (the Orange Book). We supply this directly to you as part of your package so you don’t have to worry about extra hidden costs.
During the open-book exam, you are permitted to use this copy. You can use official plastic indexing tabs and highlight or underline sections of the text to help you navigate faster. However, please note that you cannot have any loose sheets, sample exam questions, or handwritten notes inside the book, as this will result in immediate disqualification by the exam invigilator.
What happens if I don't pass the online exam on the final day?
Don’t panic. If you do not achieve the required pass mark on your first attempt, you do not have to retake the entire 5-day classroom training course.
At Elec Training, we will analyse your exam diagnostic report to see which sections of BS 7671 caused you trouble. We can then arrange a standalone exam resit for you at our Wolverhampton head office for a nominal re-examination fee. Our tutors will also provide guidance on how to sharpen your book-navigation speed before you re-sit.
I haven’t been in a classroom or taken an exam for years—is this course too difficult?
This is a very common concern for experienced installers, but the course is specifically structured to support you. The 2382-26 exam does not test your ability to memorize hundreds of pages of regulations; it tests your ability to navigate the book quickly and accurately.
Our tutors are time-served sparkies who know exactly how to break down complex legal terminology into everyday site language. Throughout the five days, you will complete extensive mock exam questions on a computer, getting you completely comfortable with the exam format and time management before you sit the real thing.
Is this a practical course, or is it entirely classroom-based theory?
The City & Guilds 2382-26 is a 100% theory-based qualification. There is no practical workshop element, and you do not need to bring hand tools or test meters.
The entire course takes place in our dedicated training suites, focusing on understanding the intent behind the regulations, performing necessary design calculations, and mastering the index system so you can apply the rules correctly to your practical installation and inspection work on-site.
Can I book multiple spaces for my employees, and do you offer corporate packages?
Absolutely. If you are an electrical contractor or manage a maintenance department looking to upgrade your team to the new Amendment 4 standards, we can accommodate group bookings at our Wolverhampton centre.
For larger commercial clients or industrial teams, we can also discuss bespoke corporate training options. Please get in touch with our office team directly via our contact form or phone number to discuss group rates and available block dates.
If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us—we’re here to help!
