How the Level 3 Electrical NVQ Works

If you’re looking at the Level 3 Electrical NVQ and trying to work out how the portfolio works, whether you need a job, how workplace assessments are completed, or how the NVQ leads towards the AM2 and ECS Gold Card, this episode walks you through the full process.

Elec Training delivers Level 3 electrical NVQ support across the UK, combining an online portfolio, workplace-based assessment and employer support for learners who need suitable paid electrical work to complete their qualification.

The important thing to understand from the start is that the Level 3 Electrical NVQ is a workplace competence qualification.

You are not just sitting another classroom exam.

You need to demonstrate that you can carry out the required electrical work competently in a real working environment.

What is the Level 3 Electrical NVQ?

The Level 3 Electrical NVQ is used to demonstrate occupational competence through real workplace evidence and assessment.

For learners following the current City & Guilds route, the relevant qualification sits within the 5357 Electrotechnical qualification framework.

The NVQ stage is different from your classroom-based Level 2 or Level 3 technical training because this part of the pathway is about proving what you can actually do in the workplace.

You build evidence from genuine electrical work, submit that evidence through your online portfolio, work with an NVQ assessor, and complete workplace observations.

Once the required competence has been demonstrated, you can progress towards the relevant AM2 and the wider ECS Gold Card pathway.

Is the Level 3 Electrical NVQ Completed Online?

The portfolio is completed and managed online, but the NVQ itself is not a purely online qualification.

You upload your workplace evidence to an online portfolio.

Your assessor reviews that evidence, gives you feedback, identifies anything that is missing, and helps you understand what still needs to be demonstrated.

But the evidence itself has to come from suitable real-world electrical work.

Elec Training normally completes two on-site workplace assessments during the NVQ so your assessor can observe and verify practical competence in the workplace.

The simplest way to think about it is:

Your portfolio is online, but your competence is demonstrated at work.

What Evidence Goes Into an Electrical NVQ Portfolio?

Your NVQ portfolio is built from evidence showing the electrical work you have actually carried out.

Depending on the qualification requirements and the work being assessed, evidence can include photographs of work in progress, job documentation, testing records, risk assessments, method statements, drawings, witness evidence, assessor observations and professional discussions.

Your assessor reviews the evidence against the qualification requirements.

If something is missing, the assessor identifies the gap so you know which additional work or evidence you need.

The aim is not simply to upload lots of photographs.

The portfolio needs to demonstrate that you are competent across the required range of electrical work.

Do You Need a Job to Complete the Level 3 Electrical NVQ?

You need access to suitable electrical work because workplace competence has to be demonstrated through real electrical activity.

That does not necessarily mean you must already have a suitable electrical job before speaking to Elec Training.

This is one of the biggest problems adult learners face.

They complete their technical training, reach the NVQ stage and then realise they need genuine workplace experience to build their portfolio.

Elec Training solves that problem differently from a standard assessment-only provider.

If you need workplace experience to complete your NVQ, Elec Training can help you secure suitable paid electrical work through its UK-wide employer network.

Two dedicated recruitment teams actively contact employers and continue that process until the learner has the workplace experience needed to complete the qualification.

How Quickly Do Elec Training NVQ Learners Find Paid Electrical Work?

In a random sample of 270 Elec Training NVQ learners from Q1 to Q3 2026, 93% secured paid electrical work within one month.

A further 6% secured paid electrical work between one and six months, while 1% took longer than six months.

That means 99% of the sampled learners secured paid electrical work within six months.

During the same period, Elec Training created 274 new employer relationships, and 74% of those relationships resulted in an Elec learner being employed.

Those figures matter because workplace access is often the biggest practical bottleneck between completing technical training and completing the NVQ.

What Happens During the NVQ Assessment Process?

Once your route has been confirmed, you begin building evidence from suitable electrical work.

You upload that evidence into your online portfolio.

Your assessor reviews it and tells you what has been accepted and where additional evidence is required.

Elec Training normally carries out two on-site workplace assessments.

During these visits, your assessor observes practical work, checks competence and verifies evidence from the workplace.

You then continue filling any remaining evidence gaps until all the required competence has been demonstrated.

The process is:

Workplace experience → evidence collection → online portfolio → assessor feedback → workplace assessment → qualification completion.

How Much Does the Level 3 Electrical NVQ Cost?

The Elec Training Level 3 Electrical NVQ costs £2,249 including VAT.

On-site assessor visits cost £250 per visit.

Elec Training normally completes two workplace visits, so a learner requiring two visits would typically pay £500 in on-site assessment fees.

That gives a typical Elec Training cost of £2,749 before the external AM2, assuming two assessor visits and no additional recruitment or workplace-placement service is required.

If you need Elec Training to source suitable paid electrical work, recruitment and employer-placement support is charged separately where required.

The AM2 is also paid for separately because it is completed externally.

Is AM2 Included in the Level 3 Electrical NVQ?

No.

The AM2 is not included in the £2,249 NVQ fee.

Once the relevant qualification route has been completed, learners progress through the appropriate NET gateway and complete the relevant AM2 at an approved National Electrotechnical Training assessment centre.

Elec Training does not deliver the AM2.

The exact AM2 route depends on the qualification pathway you have followed, so it is important not to assume that every Level 3 learner takes the same AM2 version.

Your route should be checked before the assessment is booked.

Does Completing the NVQ Automatically Give You an ECS Gold Card?

No.

Completing the Level 3 Electrical NVQ does not automatically issue an ECS Gold Card.

The NVQ is a key part of the occupational competence pathway, but you must also meet the current ECS requirements.

For most learners progressing towards the Installation Electrician Gold Card, that means completing the relevant competence qualification, the relevant AM2, holding the required BS 7671 qualification, completing the current ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment, and then applying through ECS.

Think of the NVQ as a major qualification milestone rather than the final card itself.

What Is the Normal Elec Training Pathway?

For most adult beginners following the Elec Training route, the pathway is:

Level 2, then Level 3, followed by the 18th Edition, Level 3 NVQ, the relevant external AM2 and then the ECS Gold Card pathway.

The exact route can vary depending on qualifications and experience you already hold.

If you already have a Level 3 electrical qualification, Elec Training will check your learner history and previous qualifications before confirming your NVQ route.

Recognition of Prior Learning or additional bridging requirements may apply depending on what you already hold.

Who Is the Level 3 Electrical NVQ For?

The NVQ is generally for learners who have reached the workplace-competence stage of their electrical qualification pathway.

That includes people who have already completed the relevant Level 3 technical training and now need to demonstrate competence through workplace evidence.

It can also include people who already work in the electrical industry and need to complete the recognised competence qualification required for their progression.

Your previous qualifications matter, so eligibility should be checked before enrolling.

How Long Does the Level 3 Electrical NVQ Take?

There is no single completion time for every learner.

The main factor is how quickly you can produce the required workplace evidence across the necessary range of electrical work.

Someone already working regularly in suitable electrical installation work can usually build evidence more quickly.

Someone who first needs suitable electrical work has to allow time for that workplace experience to begin.

The speed of your own portfolio work matters as well.

Learners who regularly upload evidence, respond to assessor feedback and have access to a good range of work normally progress more efficiently than learners who leave evidence sitting for weeks or months.

Final Summary

The simplest way to understand the Level 3 Electrical NVQ is this:

You carry out suitable electrical work, build your evidence online, work with an NVQ assessor, complete your workplace assessments and demonstrate the competence required for the qualification.

If workplace access is the thing stopping you, Elec Training can also help eligible NVQ learners secure suitable paid electrical work through its UK-wide employer network.

If you want to know which NVQ route applies to you, what your existing qualifications count towards, or whether your current work is suitable, use the Check My Eligibility form or speak to an Elec Training NVQ adviser.
